Top tips for using chainsaws safely

1. Always wear the correct protective gear, such as gloves, safety glasses, earplugs, and chainsaw safety chaps.
   
2. When starting a chainsaw, use the proper technique according to the manufacturer’s instructions to prevent kickback.
   
3. Keep the chain tensioned correctly to avoid kickback and ensure optimal cutting efficiency.
   
4. Maintain a sharp chain to lower the chance of backlash and improve the efficiency of your cuts. Sharpen it often and replace your chain when necessary.
   
5. Use the right chain pitch and gauge to get the best performance from your machine.
   
6. Avoid overloading the chainsaw and never attempt to cut through wood that is too thick or harder than the recommended timber.
   
7. Pay attention to the kickback zone; this is the upper quarter of the guide bar. Do not cut in this area as it can cause the chainsaw to whip up and cause serious injury.
