Seven tips for safe tree limbing
Husqvarna chainsaws are more than tools to Zimbabwean foresters and tree cutters; they are dependable partners in hard labour. Part of tree felling and forestry includes limbing, which is the process of removing branches, either for pruning or to remove sharp spikes from logs before being transported. Proper limbing techniques and safety considerations are important.
Our chainsaws are highly regarded due to their outstanding quality, performance, and longevity. As the authorised supplier of Husqvarna chainsaws in Zimbabwe, Cutting Edge guarantees that these machines are supported by an extensive service network across the country. We also offer the correct personal protective equipment (PPE) for chainsaws, such as gloves, chainsaw chaps, forestry helmets and hearing protection.

Safety tips for limbing trees
Tip 1: Work at the right height – Work at a comfortable height when limbing a felled tree, preferably around the waist level. Avoid reaching or bending too much since this can impair your control and balance. Use the proper climbing gear if you’re limbing a standing tree to provide a safe and sturdy working platform. Never try to limb branches that are beyond your safe range of movement.
Tip 2: Stand with a steady stance – Complete chainsaw control requires a stable, well-balanced stance. Spread your weight equally and place your feet shoulder-width apart on the ground. Avoid slippery or uneven areas under your feet. Maintaining a steady stance allows you to respond swiftly to any sudden branch or chainsaw movements.
Tip 3: Maintain firm contact with the branches – Before cutting, make sure the chainsaw is correctly positioned against the branch. Keep firm downward pressure on the chainsaw as it cuts. Bouncing the saw or holding it loosely against the branch can result in a loss of control and possible kickback.
Tip 4: Use controlled motion with both hands – Always hold the chainsaw firmly in both hands for maximum stability and control. Never use one-handed operations as this greatly increases the chance of accidents. Avoid abrupt jerks or excessive force and instead use controlled fluid motions.
Tip 5: Prevent kickback – One of the main causes of chainsaw injuries is kickback, which is the abrupt and violent upward or backward movement of the chainsaw. Avoid cutting with the upper quadrant of the guide bar tip to reduce the chance of kickback, and keep an eye out for any hidden branches or impediments that can cause the saw to bind or pinch. Keep the chain tension and sharpness at the right levels.
Tip 6: Identify and avoid branches under tension – These are branches that are bending under tension. When trimmed, they could suddenly spring back, creating a major risk for injury or accidents. Identify which branches are under tension before cutting, then adjust your cut accordingly. To gradually release the tension, make a relief cut on the branch’s tension side before making the final cut.
Tip 7: Brake the chain before handling the branches – After finishing a cut, always apply the chain brake and ensure that it has come to a complete stop before handling the cut branch or taking your hands off the chainsaw. Make it a habit to apply the chain brake right away following every cut.
Foresters and tree cutters in Zimbabwe can greatly lower the chance of accidents and guarantee a safer working environment by following these seven safety guidelines. Keep in mind that maintaining chainsaw safety calls for regular attention to detail and sticking to recommended procedures.
