It’s clear that the construction sector in Zimbabwe is experiencing a boom – the World Bank estimates that the sector will grow by 5.2% in 2024. This surge in construction means that there is a growing demand for high-quality concrete work and precision results, so local contractors need the right tools to keep up with demand and standards.

Cutting Edge supplies various Husqvarna construction tools and machines, many of which are specialised for certain applications but deliver exceptional results. These include mixers, screeders, power trowels, polishers, scarifiers and dust collectors. But why do local builders need these specialist concrete machines? Let’s run through the entire concrete construction process to explain.

Quality starts with concrete mixing

All buildings need strong foundations and flooring, which begins with well-mixed concrete. We supply SIRL mixers which offer a reliable and consistent mix that improves the quality of your project from the start. Mixers minimise manual labour and help to save time and material wastage. This keeps projects within budget and on time.

Our SIRL mixers have wheels and can be towed to job sites, making them highly manoeuvrable and efficient. The drum capacities range between 160 and 450 litres, allowing contractors to produce up to 12 cubic metres of concrete per hour!

After the initial concrete pour

Once concrete has been poured, it needs to be vibrated so that it settles nicely and all air bubbles are removed. To do this effectively a vibrating poker can be used. This is a vibrating rod that is dipped into the wet concrete for a short period. We offer Husqvarna Smart Pokers with different hose lengths and tube diameters.

These are intelligent high-frequency pokers that operate at a high amplitude and stable speed to ensure maximum compaction and air removal. The surface of the concrete should be relatively level, but a screeder may be needed to ensure it’s completely flat.

Smooth surface with a power trowel

When the concrete starts to set, maintaining the smooth, level surface is crucial. Power trowels are the perfect solution. These machines look like industrial fans and have large rotating blades that smooth the surface and create a flawless finish.

This improves the durability of the concrete and drastically cuts down on the time it takes to finish the surface. A properly trowelled surface is denser and more resistant to wear, which improves the durability of the build.

Scarifiers for surface renewal

Once the concrete is dry, there may be a few imperfections – raised areas or misaligned sections. A scarifier is needed to grind away these uneven sections. A Husqvarna scarifier uses rotating drums with carbide-tipped flails to chip away the surface of the concrete and level it out. These machines can be used to align sections, remove bumps or prepare the surface for an additional top layer of coating.

Scarifiers can also be used for repairs or prepping surfaces for waterproofing. Removing the top layer of concrete and creating a rough surface allows for better adhesion of new coatings and repair materials.

Polishing concrete to perfection

The final step of a high-quality, aesthetic concrete floor is a polished surface. Husqvarna polishers use high-speed polishing discs to create a high-gloss finish. This is ideal for commercial offices, showrooms and high-end residential projects.

Polished concrete looks sleek and modern, but it is also easier to clean than tiles and carpets. Polishing the surface creates a wear-resistant layer which minimises maintenance requirements in the long run. It also creates a reflective surface that improves lighting and lowers the energy requirements of the building.

Dust collectors can be used throughout these processes

Mixing, pouring, levelling and polishing concrete creates a lot of dust, which can affect workers. Husqvarna dust collectors are essential tools for a healthy work environment. These industrial vacuums capture dust particles at the source and prevent them from spreading throughout the construction site.

They can be attached directly to many of the concrete machines, as well as power cutters and other construction tools. This minimises respiratory health risks for builders and improves visibility on the site. Zimbabwe has regulations for dust control on construction sites, so contractors need a dust collector to comply with these laws.

The advantages of light concrete machines

Our range of light concrete machines is designed to be powerful and efficient while remaining lightweight and easy to move. This reduces operator fatigue, allows builders to work longer, and improves your productivity. Machines that are easy to move are also ideal for tight spaces and confined construction sites.

Zimbabwean builders are the backbone of a growing industry and we supply concrete machines that make their jobs easier and safer. These specialist machines allow contractors to achieve world-class results and complete high-quality projects within budget and on time.
